For you to start gaining weight, you need to have an excess of 3,500 calories per pound you gain.
It is most likely anything but food. You would need to eat an extra 30 apples in a day to gain a single pound of weight.
It could be a change in how much water you drink or your body retaining water, or something else.
It’s not food.
I highly doubt it’s real weight. Very likely water weight. However, the first set of meals you listed is very minimal…in fact, much too low in calories to be beneficial to you. I can’t tell from your question if you’re trying to lose weight or are just aiming to maintain a healthy diet. But the less you eat, the more your body will start to hold on to weight because it thinks you’re starving and your metabolism slows as a result. While there are plenty of diet myths out there, the whole “starvation mode” idea is absolutely true.
A latte, nonfat or regular, isn’t a meal. It’s sugar, caffiene, and little else. Fruit, while healthy for you, also isn’t a meal. Fiber and vitamins, yes. If you add some yogurt, a good snack or breakfast . But not substantial enough for lunch, especially since you aren’t eating breakfast (big mistake. diet rule number one is EAT BREAKFAST). You say you don’t eat carbs, but it sounds like that’s all you’re eating. Maybe not refined carbs but fruit, vegetables, lattes, are pretty much all carbs, and very very little protein or fat (yes, you do need healthy fats in your diet). Sorry, I hope I don’t come off condescending, I don’t mean to be. It’s just that you don’t seem to be going about a diet in the healthiest way and it’ll hurt your body in the long run. The second set of meals does sound much more balanced, although still pretty minimal and skipping breakfast is a really bad idea. Some suggestions…
- Have something in the morning, even if it’s just a yogurt and some fruit, a bowl of whole grain cereal with low fat milk, or some oatmeal. If you get a typical night’s sleep, your body has been fasting for 7 or 8 hours. Feed it! It’ll keep your metabolism up
-You need to have more than just fruits and vegetables. Try to have a balance of carbs, fat, and protein in your meals. Carbs give you energy and, if healthy carbs (ie. whole grains, fiber), help you feel full. Fat also helps you feel satieted – choose healthy fats like nuts for a snack, use a little olive oil for your stir-fry, try edamame (full of protein, fiber, and healthy fat), salmon is also a really good choice. Like fiber, protein helps to keep your blood sugar stable, helping you feel full. Your muscles, skin, and nails, among other parts of your body need protein. Eggs, fish, nuts/nut butters, beans, and lentils are all good source of protein, not to mention all just plain good for you.
- Since you seem to like to eat small portions for meals, why not try having six small meals , sort of like large snacks, 200-300 calories each instead of 3 larger meals.
Hope I could help some. Best of luck
Hi hun,
It does sound like water weight or your body has gone in to ’starvation mode’ which means it notices it’s getting fewer calories and then tries to hold on to anything you give it!
A pound of weight is 3500 calories, which is a huge amount of fruit salad. Are you drinking enough water? You need between 2-3 litres a day at this time of year. If you don’t drink enough then your body will hold on to it, because it doesn’t know when it’s going to get more.
You’re diet is a great start, healthy, but you should increase your calories and the frequency that you eat if you don’t want to gain bloat. Little snacks regularly are great….they don’t have to be fattening! Try eating a banana or cereal bar before/after or while you have your coffee. Mid morning have another piece of fruit. For lunch have a salad with tuna or other protein, some soup with a veggie wrap etc. Mid arvo try snacking on some dried fruit and nuts, or rice cakes with some peanut butter. Your savory dinners sounds great, but have a frozen yog for after dinner…not just dinner itself. Remember to keep your water levels topped up too!!!!
Good luck honey
Fruit is very unlikely to make you gain weight. You would have to eat SO much of it to make a difference. Fruit and veggies are considered “free” on any diet plan. You can eat as much as you want (except like potatoes which are not that good for you). You may not eat carbs so to say, but fruits and veggies still have carbs in them, but it is a minimal amount. You don’t want to eliminate carbs, because that is not healthy either. You should aim to have some protein (chicken, fish, soy and beans), then a lot of fruits and veggies. If you want to add whole grains, that would be an excellent ideas as long as you still to whole wheat, and basically any grain that is not highly processed.
