ok the diet. try mixing it up do different things with him. SO he isnt bored. dont let other people ride him. they may not ride him properly. If it is possible try to ride him every week. And try to spend more time with him. But dont let other people. It has to be YOU
boredom, basically. let him ouside more and put some nasty tasting stuff on his stall door that he cribs on.
I used to have the same problem with my morgan mare. the most common reason horses crib is because they are bored. if he is ridden everyday and spends a lot of time out in the pasture, it is likely that he is just the type of horse that likes to be busy, and not because he is not receiving proper care.
I have found that horses who go in shows regularly are more likely to be cribbers- When they are at a show, there is lots of activity the day before and the days of, so when the horse comes home, his home stable might not be so interesting to him, and so he begins to crib. Horses don’t crib because of abuse, so don’t worry about that! Try having him out in the pasture as much as possible, and another thing you can try is putting toys in his stall. you can buy a kind of “treat lick” that you hang from the ceiling. I got this for my Morgan, and instead of cribbing, she played with the treat lick instead when she got bored. you can buy them at almost any tack shop. But one more thing- sometimes horses learn to crib from each other, so I wouldn’t put your horse next to any young horses that are more likely to pick up on his habit. you can use a Cribbing collar – this will not cure him of cribbing, but as long as he has it on, he will not be able to do it. this also is available at most any tack shop. Good luck!
It could be something he is lacking in his diet…. most of the time… its boredom.
Bad habits are contagious. He could have picked it up from another horse in the stable.Try putting a toy or treat lick in his stall.
Had this same problem many years ago, the other answers are correct- this guy is bored!!
Try giving him some toys! A tree branch that he can pick upp, mouth & chew. Try a volley ball in his stall! My problem stallion stopped cribbing & loves to play with his ball!
horses crib because of boardum or stress. you can put some type of stain on the wood in his stall so he gets a bad taste in his mouth. also put up several toys and tasty snaks to help. also try to eliminate stressful situations. Does he crib when he is turned out???? If not then leave him out more. There is also a cribbing collar if you want to try that. I’ve never tryed one but it might work.
Its a hard habit to break, but best of luck
