The betta will be ok (alone) without a filter for a little while. The minnows on the other hand will most likely die. I recommend that you separate the betta from the minnows for now. Otherwise, the minnows will put out ammonia, therefore making the water quality really bad when the filter isn’t working to help circulate the water. The best thing you can do is to get another filter. The next best thing is to attach an air pump with air stone to add oxygen to the water temporarily until you can get another filter. As a last resort, find a neighbor/friend/anyone that can take your fish and provide a filtered tank for them.
In fact, how big is your tank? What kind of minnows are they? If they are the rosy-red minnows, those guys can actually get quite large and any tank smaller than 20 gallons for 3 would be too small. A betta requires at least 5 gallons to be comfortable, as well.
Water changes.
Change the water once a week. Remove 25% of the water and top it off with fresh water. Remember to use water that does not have chlorine in it as tap water has.
Get a 1 gal milk container, or 2. Fill them with tap water, let them sit for 24 hours. Now they are safe to use as the chlorine has evaporated from the open container.
They will not die as the previous per says.
You can safely do water changes this way. But change only 25 to 30% of the water and make sure the water is not cold or too warm. It should be close to the same temp as the water your fish are living in
What’s wrong with the pump? Is it still blowing air?
You don’t need a large pump. Walmart has them for less than $10.
To answer your question:
You really need a filter. With 4 fish in a small aquarium, they’re going to pollute the place with their poop and pee, but more importantly, they’re going to use up all the oxygen. The air pump stirs up the water allowing oxygen to get into the water. Without that, the minnows will die for sure. The betta is able to breathe air, but the poop and pee will get him.
Best thing to do is get rid of the minnows. They’re going to pollute the tank, and suck up all the oxygen. The betta has the best chance for survival without filtration.
I’m not sure when you say you have “a small tank” how small it is but I’ll say this. The smaller the tank the more frequent your water changes are going to have to be. Without knowing the gallons I’d say off hand – change 10 – 20% of the water at least once a week. No less. You could also add if you can get it a solution of bacteria that pet stores carry. The bottle will for water cycling but it can also be used on a regular basis to minimize levels of ammonia and nitrates. Also, watch how much you feed them. Give them a little, make sure that they’ve consumed all of it before giving them more. Any uneaten food will quickly decay and in excess amounts foul the water. Good luck!
All you can do now is partial water changes. Treat and let set aside about 25% of water to do changes about every four days..it really depends on what size of tank. if it’s fairly small, there is not a lot of ley way. By thst I mean if its a real small tank, the oxygen in the water will not last long and the partial water changes is the only way to replace it. you really need to see if you can get even a cheap filter.
Your fish should be okay if you change the water once or twice a week and use Aqua-Safe to treat the water before you put the water back in the tank and before you put the fishes in the water. Follow the directions on the bottle for how much Aqua-Safe to use. You can get this at Wal-Mart for under $6.00 and it will last a very long time. Rebecca
I suggest you start saving up money if you want to keep your minnows. But before you get enough money, change the water about 50% each week, or 25% twice a week. Other people say only 25% a week but thats for big tanks. Make sure you don’t overfeed and scoop out any left overs.
Also, try separating the betta. Betta fish don’t need oxygen in the water, they go to the surface, so try getting a small betta cup or betta tank for it until you can get a new filter.
The filter i would recommend for you is called The Whisper PF-10 by the Tetra brand,it’s for 5-10 gallon tanks, but the thing is you never said anything specific about your tank size,if it’s a 5 gallon or 10 gallon, try getting this power filter. It works very well and it’s very reliable and last but not least it’s EXTREMELY cheap, one of the cheapest power filters on the market today,it’s only $18.99,that’s not even $20.00
They have pumps at wal-mart for about 6 dollars and the model I bought came with some tubing. You can skimp on air stones, but they are only like $1.20 for two. That will keep the water churning until a more through solution can be devised.
